The sights to see are along U.S. 395. Here are some of my favorite photo subjects, while on my many drives down this most beautiful of highways. The Sawtooth Ridge is seen, here, from a few miles north of Bridgeport, CA. I have done several ski mountaineering trips here, climbing and skiing, first, Matterhorn Peak (12,264') on May 13, 1978. More peak tours were to follow. Crater Crest (11,394'), was skied twice by the local chapter, led by me. There are other tours that don't involve summits. Backcountry skiing here is often excellent.

Mono Lake from the U.S. 395 Vista Point.

Elderberry Canyon and Mt. Tom make another classic view, from the Sherwin Grade Vista Point. I had always been tempted to ski this famous canyon, and got the chance in 1997. We skied up to 11,200 to 12,000 feet, and had a great run down in about an hour.

Birch Mountain (13,602').

Mt Williamson (14, 374').
